David P. Smith will be touring the BC interior and Alberta with his band in November 2016 to support his new album, New Blues, a raw original take on the blues form recorded live off the floor in his hometown of Victoria BC.

DAVID P. SMITH
David has been writing, recording, and performing music for 25 years. The defining threads of this musical journey have been Smith’s unique musical primitivism - a raw, accordion-driven reconstruction of blues and country music - and his compelling, unflinchingly original songwriting. He has quietly established himself as one of Victoria’s most captivating songwriters, his songs vivid spaces where humour and despair mingle then decide to down a couple of whiskies. Smith is essentially a storyteller, but not a teller of the stories you’re used to. Sad, slapstick, savage, and surreal, you will not hear songs like this from anyone else anywhere else.

ANA BON BON
An Ana Bon-Bon concert can transport you to the rollicking music hall stages of the 1930s or a country juke joint on a sultry summer afternoon. Bon-Bon is quite naturally cabaret with a raw blues constitution.

ABOUT NEW BLUES
David P. Smith’s New Blues is a raw, original, live off the floor, fresh blood, 21st century take on blues forms.

Joining songwriter/accordionist Smith are longtime collaborator Marek Tyler (Kathryn Calder, Meatdraw, Aidan Knight) on drums, Victoria’s iconic roots guitarist Dan Weisenburger (Fans & Motor Supply), Hank Pine (Hank ‘n’ Lily) on cello, and country and roots stalwart Jody Johnson (Robin’s Nest Recording) on bass. Smith’s daughter Chloe Lampman adds some bloodline harmonies on the country flavoured Picture of Me.

Recorded to decidedly lo-fi ¼’ tape, accordion is at the heart of this record, harnessing bayou and blues-based rhythms and driven hot through a tube-powered Fender Excelsior amplifier. Lyrically Smith draws on the well of surrealism found in early country and blues, while bringing his own deeply personal visions - profane, dark, and humourous - to the forefront. From stripped down drum and accordion duos, to trios with drums and guitar or cello, to full four or five piece ensembles, the energy and electricity of these performances is palpable.

“Smith’s lyrical confidence and inventiveness is truly remarkable, lifting him not just above his local peers but into the top tier of Canadian music in general” Randy Gelling, CFUV Radio, Victoria, BC
